Bricklaying Apprentice at Water Lane, Leeds

14th September 2026

🧱 Building skills, building a career
Deacon Shaw is in the second year of his bricklaying apprenticeship, gaining hands-on experience on Water Lane, one of Leeds’ largest build-to-rent regeneration projects, while attending college one day a week.

Along the way, he’s helped build a development involving close to one million bricks, developing the confidence, technical skill and industry knowledge to match.

Deacon is now moving onto another major HG Construction project in Manchester, with his sights set on building a career in construction.

“There’s always room for improvement. I’m always looking to learn, get better and pick up advice from more experienced people. If you’re willing to put the work in, you can keep progressing and build a career in construction.”
